An analysis of political parties and candidates contesting for seats in the Lagos state House of Assembly shows that no fewer than 221 candidates are contesting for the 40 seats available on different platforms.
The governorship and Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled to be held across the country on Saturday, April 11.
According to the report, the candidates for the assembly seats in Lagos are contesting under 17 political parties across the 20 local government areas in the state.
PM News confirms a report by NAN that only 43 of the contestants are female while the remaining 178 are male.
Also, the Peoples
Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress have contestants in all the 40 state constituencies while the other 15 parties do not have candidates in some constituencies. The Alliance for Democracy is contesting in 28 constituencies, the Progressive People’s Alliance in 20, the Accord Party in four, the Labour Party in 18 and the All Progressive Grand Alliance in 23. The list also shows that the Unity Party of Nigeria, KOWA Party and New Nigeria Peoples Party are contesting in two constituencies each.
Also, the National Conscience Party and United Progressive Party are vying for seats in nine constituencies each, the African Peoples Alliance in 7, while the Social Democratic Party and Mega Progressive Peoples Party are vying in five each.
The Peoples Democratic Movement is seeking for seats in six constituencies and the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria in one. 16 candidates, comprising 14 male and two female, also indicated their intention to contest for the governorship seat in the state. Ten of the candidates had, last week, however said they were shelving their ambitions in support of the APC candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode. Some parties, also on Thursday, endorsed the PDP candidate, Jimi Agbaje.
