Student came up with genius way to avoid paying rent

This student has landed himself a set of swanky student digs… and he built them himself. Not wanting to land himself with piles of student debt 25-year-old Joel Weber has built himself this executive mobile home to see him through his third and fourth year at the University of Texas in Austin.

Average rent on campus is about $800 (£515) a month. Instead Joel took a year out to build this home as a cost of $20,000 (£12,800) and the brilliant thing he can sell it on afterwards.

He used savings along with materials donated by the local community – to put his own home together.

Speaking with ABC News, he said he put together the designs himself and received help from a volunteer carpenter and electrician.

The student, who works part time doing landscaping, house-sitting and as a nanny – said that, when he has the extra money, he charges less when helping locals out. He said: ‘It’s about being able to give back to these people in my community.’
