Doctors have removed 420 kidney stones from a man’s body in emergency operation, Zhejiang Province, China.
The man, named Mr He, was admitted to hospital with intense abdominal pain, once doctors saw his scan results it was immediately decided to operate him. An agonising procedure lasted about two hours and an incredible 420 stones were removed from the man’s left kidney.
Dr Wei Yubin, the surgeon who performed the surgery, commented on the operation saying: “I have never seen so many stones before. The operation took less than two hours of which 45 minutes was used to remove the stones. At the end of the operation I realised my arms and legs were numb.
The plate used to collect the stones had at least 420 of them of varying sizes and coloured green and yellow. These didn’t include the tiny rice sized stones that were taken out using specialist suction equipment and these numbered over 100.”
Doctors at the hospital suggest that it’s likely that Mr He’s obsession with tofu, a local soy cheese with a high concentration of calcium sulphate, and a lack of water, are to blame. Soon after the surgery the 55-year-old was discharged and was ordered to change his eating habits. All 420 kidney stones were given to him as a souvenir.
